Original painting: "Portia" by Sir John Everett Millais
Completed portrait of the Dean
I was incredibly excited when I learned that a custom portrait was needed for the office of the dean for season 1 of Overcompensating. Step one was sourcing some options for the base painting from those that exist in the public domain. Ultimately Portia, by Sir John Everett Millais (1886) was selected. I knew there wasn't going to be any opportunity to have a photo taken that would line up perfectly with the positioning of the figure's head, so I collected a number of images of our dean, Andrea Martin, that were at least at a similar angle to use as a reference, and began drawing her portrait from scratch.
