Greetings! My name is Romy Block and I am a multidisciplinary artist, graphic designer, and illustrator living and working in Toronto. Art has been been a constant passion throughout my life, beginning with art lessons at age six. It led me to OCADU, where I pursued a major in painting and drawing while also exploring other mediums like pottery, printmaking, jewelry design, and bookbinding, before graduating with a BFA in 2007.
In 2010 I began attending George Brown College to study graphic design, eventually culminating in two certificates in 2013. My career began in the not-for-profit sector as an in-house graphic designer, where I worked for several years before transitioning into the film industry in 2022.
In my art practice, while primarily a painter, I also create through sculpture, papercraft, and digital illustration. My work often explores the themes of connection, community, and isolation.
Currently I work as a graphic designer for film and television, creating graphics for props, costumes, and set pieces. I particularly enjoy researching historical design styles, creating original graphics that authentically capture the essence of specific eras. I also love the meticulous work of aging graphics digitally.
When I’m not working, I can usually be found reading a book, enjoying one my many hobbies (including jewelry design, beadwork, and embroidery), and hanging out with my two cats.
