Mosaic tile floor - vector
Mosaic tile floor - final art
These photos were taken on a location scout, and were provided to me by the production designer as a reference for what she was looking for in our bathroom set build.
I began by assembling a series of stock vector files of different tile patterns that I could potentially reassemble into a new pattern. Some elements, like the vines and leaves, had to be built from scratch.
I then began building the design as a vector, keeping the file manageable and small. Once the full tile pattern had been laid out and approved, I imported it into Photoshop, and began the arduous process of adding texture.
Each colour went into a separate layer, where I added different tile textures.
Tile floor - detail
I think, given the opportunity to design another mosaic tile floor, I might to build the main pattern completely from scratch (and I probably would have avoided square tiles with rounded corners), but I think the overall effect was very effective, especially once the Scenic team had added some much needed grit and dirt!
